Pres. Rouhani felicitates Tunisia on National Day

TEHRAN, Mar. 20 (MNA) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani sent a message of congratulations to his Tunisian counterpart Michel Aoun on the occasion of the country's Independence Day on March 20.

In a message to President of Tunisia Beji Caid Essebsi, Iran’s Rouhani congratulated the nation and government of the North African country on its National Day.

The Iranian President expressed confidence that in the light of good efforts of Iranian and Tunisian officials, cooperation and mutual relations will be further expanded in line with interests of the two Muslim and brother countries.

He further wished health and success for his Tunisian counterpart as well as progress and prosperity for the people of the North African country.

Following a period of rule by the Ottoman Empire, Tunisia came under French control in 1881 and became a French protectorate in 1883. On 20 March 1956, a treaty was signed that formally recognised Tunisia's independence, creating the Kingdom of Tunisia. On 25 June 1957, Tunisia became a republic with Habib Bourguiba as its first president.
